ELLEN & KARIN, MY INFLUENCERS
EVERYONE NEEDS A HOME, a safe space where they can be themselves and feel comfortable. What it takes to feel at home is, of course, individual, but for me, it has been about looking around and feeling that my home reflects care—for myself, my family, my daily life, and my creativity. In more concrete terms, this has meant, for example, that I prefer old, soulful furniture and objects over new ones and have stubbornly avoided all kinds of "throwaway items." One might think these ideas are modern compared to the mass consumption and environmental destruction of recent decades, but we are far behind the pioneers of the last turn of the century.
My love for the turn-of-the-century approach to creating homes is closely tied to the ideas and perspectives developed by individuals like Ellen Key and Karin Larsson. Ellen Key sought to create beautiful and functional homes, becoming a strong advocate for "the new Art Nouveau style" – which emphasized people's right to beauty and harmony, drawing significant inspiration from the organic and flowing forms of nature.
Ellen Key's guiding principles for interior design were light, air, simplicity, function, honesty, and harmony. Luxury and lavish means were not the focus. Key firmly believed that the ability to appreciate beauty is the foundation of a cozy and personal home. She even claimed that everyone possesses a sixth sense – a sense of beauty, tied to a kind of belief in life.

At Carlshaga, we draw inspiration from the timeless beauty and craftsmanship of the turn of the century, a period shaped by pioneers like Karin and Carl Larsson. Their vision of the good life and harmonious homes resonates deeply in our design philosophy.
Karin Larsson's innovative approach, combining bold colors, sustainable choices, and handmade textiles, is a cornerstone of our style. Her fresh and airy interiors, often created with both new and repurposed furniture, reflect a National Romantic flair that feels just as relevant today.
At Carlshaga, we believe that every home should tell a story—one of care, creativity, and individuality. Just like Karin Larsson collaborated with local craftsmen to create furniture that blended functionality with beauty, we curate pieces that embody the same timeless qualities.

The artist Carl Larsson and the designer Karin Larsson greatly influenced how people furnished and colored their homes around the turn of the century. They symbolized the dream of the good life and a cozy, inviting home.
Karin Larsson, in particular, was far ahead of her time. She decorated with both new and repurposed furniture, often incorporating her own boldly colored textiles. The overall effect was fresh and airy, with a touch of National Romanticism.
To create new furniture, Karin Larsson collaborated with local carpenters, ensuring a blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern design. Sundborn became one of the world's most famous artist homes, and its interior design was widely featured in the trendiest magazines of the era, inspiring countless others.
